SB 915: Local Control for AV Operations in California

Senator Dave Cortese (D-San Jose) has introduced SB 915, a bill aimed at empowering local governments in California to have more control over the deployment and operation of autonomous vehicles (AVs) within their jurisdictions.

The bill addresses concerns about AVs and public safety, giving local communities the authority to grant permits, enforce traffic laws, and establish ordinances for AV companies. SB 915 seeks to ensure safety for pedestrians, passengers, and other vehicles by requiring regular inspections of AVs and allowing local ordinances to make areas like schools and airports safer. The bill emphasizes a community-centered approach, allowing each local government to set rules based on its unique needs, managing traffic and reducing potential risks. SB 915 is supported by Teamsters and the League of California Cities and responds to recent safety concerns, including the suspension of Cruise’s AV permits by the California Department of Motor Vehicles in October.
