Self-Driving Truck Technology Company, Aurora, reduces workforce by 3%
Self-driving truck technology company Aurora Innovation has reportedly laid off a significant number of employees as it aims to launch its autonomous truck business by the end of 2024. The Pittsburgh-based company confirmed a 3% staff reduction after an organizational review, with around 1,800 employees reported at the close of 2023. Despite the layoffs, Aurora is proceeding with plans to introduce up to 20 Class 8 driverless trucks navigating US highways by the end of 2024. The company is collaborating with Continental on a $300 million project to mass-produce self-driving truck hardware. Aurora, founded in 2017, faced challenges common in the autonomous vehicle industry, including high development costs, and has assured investors of sufficient funds to support operations into mid-2024, with plans for a commercial launch at the end of 2024.
